The Volunteer Program of C.S. Lewis Bilingual High School
for school year 2009/2010

Purpose of the program:

To engage the students of the high school in various volunteer activities

Goals:

- to know the working environment, mission and activities of non-governmental
- organizations, and to gain an overview of other volunteer activities
- to learn how to work independently and in teams
- to develop communication, presentation, and organizational skills
- to develop creativity, empathy, and solidarity toward the target groups, and an active approach to aiding others

The proposed program depends for its preparation and realization on a high involvement of students, using their own initiative and creativity.

The design of the program is based on the assumption that the students are not given a ready-made offer of the volunteer activities they can take part in. The students are given a sufficient level of freedom and independence to choose which activities they prefer and to organize them on their own.

The program is divided to several phases:

1. Building student teams (3-4 students per team) based on the areas they are interested in (ecology, working with children and young people, working with disabled people, aid to developing countries, etc).

2. Researching the NGO-s that are working in their specific area (via the internet and other resources)

3. Meeting representatives from selected organizations, with the aim of getting as much information on the organization as possible: what projects are undertaken, how volunteers would be involved, etc.

4. Preparing presentations for other students on the organizations visited, with the aim of promoting the organization and recruiting more volunteers for its activities.

5. Presentation event – giving the student presentations. Staff members of the organizations can be invited as guests. A PowerPoint presentation may include videos and pictures. The aim is to present specific volunteer activities as options for students.

6. Choice of a specific organization for volunteer work – All the students involved in the program will choose one organization for which they would like to volunteer. For every organization presented there will be one or two responsible students who will coordinate the volunteers.

7. Making a specific plan and a schedule of activities – determining the number of students involved and how often they will participate. Participation could involve helping with various one-time activities (campaigns, presentation days, cleaning of the park, etc.), or regular activities (clubs for children and youth, visiting the elderly in hospitals, administrative work within the organization, etc.).

8. Final event: “My experience with volunteering” – At the end of the school year there will be a final event at which the students can share their experiences in volunteer work (what they did, the purpose of it, how it changed their view of the world, what was the benefit for them and for the target group, etc.). The aim of this event is not only to share experiences but also to motivate younger students toward similar activities. There could also be some fund-raising at this event for specific projects (financial or non-financial collection, organizing a benefit ball for parents, etc.).

Timetable:

September – Building of teams; initial research of organizations

October - November – Visits to chosen organizations and meetings with their representatives; preparation of presentations

December – Making the specific plan and schedule; the volunteer work begins (there are many opportunities for volunteering before Christmas)

January - May – Engaging in volunteer work

June – Final event: the sharing of experiences (possible fund-raising, benefit ball, etc.)
