| Religion and Ethics |
 |
– the basic idea of the subject - syllabus
|
|
The name of the subject indicates that the point is to create a dialogue of values and religion, a discourse between Christians and non-Christians. We want our lessons to be ecumenical in the right sense of the word (from Greek – oikos – house). All of us live in the same house for which we bear the common responsibility. The subject Religion and Ethics will also be a “contact subject” and will support the process of building the class community.
The concept and the content of the subject can be understood as a "pyramid" with three floors: the basement is built by RELATIONSHIPS, the upper part is VALUES and at the top there are CONCEPTS.
RELATIONSHIPS
In the first year we put stress on forming the community of the class (at the very beginning we organize teambuilding stays and we keep relating to this event in the course of the year). In the interaction of small groups we discuss and model key principles of mutual communication and the basics of good friendship, family or partnership. A big space is assigned to the up-to-date questions of the students.
In the second year we move the focus from the relationships in the group to the relationship to oneself. The central concept is identity. We talk about basic human types (so called "Enneagram"), their weak and strong points, and how they can achieve personal maturity and maintain the growth. In the second block we put emphasis on questions about man that the writers of the Bible ask (so called "Biblical anthropology"). As part of the second grade evaluation the student write a test at the end of the year.
VALUES
The third year is devoted to the relationship between religion and ethics. The goal is to explain that the concepts and thinking structure have their practical impact on ethical attitudes of a human being. Based on the texts from the world literature we practically illustrate the thinking and the effects of traditional “seven deadly sins” and as an alternative to it we also talk about the Beatitudes from Jesus´ Sermon on the Mount. We expect the students to work on the selected texts and participate in the discussions during the lessons.
CONCEPTS
In the last two years of the study we want to attempt to view things from a "bird’s perspective". The fourth year bases its contents on the book “Journey”. It is related to basic life questions and answers that are provided by the main religious systems. Similarly to the third year, we start off with the texts contained in the book that are discussed in the group.
The fifth year aims at the basics of the Christian belief and is devoted to the basic structures of Christianity. It explains how Christianity perceives God, what is church and how these “basic structures” are reflected in the Western culture that was essentially formed by Christianity. It includes selected chapters from the history of Christianity.
Grading of the subject Religion and Ethics: Except for the first year, the subject is graded as any other subject. Grading of the 4th and 5th grade students includes “charity” or voluntary work (specific help according to the list of choices, the individuals´ initiative is welcome) in the volume of 10 hours during the school year. This is evaluated as “non academic factor” which creates 10 % of the final grade.
