Content:
ü Speech practice and written and spoken language exercises
ü Listening and speaking activities
ü Cover at least 1 - 10 units from Success Intermediate Course Book
ü Creative projects and presentations
ü Daily vocabulary coverage and quotation analysis
Objectives:
ü To improve the accuracy and fluency of speech
ü To practice all grammatical structures covered in the Course Book
ü To practice all four skills - speaking, listening, reading, writing
ü To extend active and passive vocabulary
ü To feel more confident when speaking to a native speaker
ü To build and develop a portfolio of accomplished work
Standards:
After completing this course you will feel more confident in speaking, especially in using the whole range of tenses. Your pronunciation will improve and your speech will sound more natural, through correct usage of articles and prepositions, phrasal verbs, idioms, etc. Your understanding of spoken and written language should also improve, along with improved reading comprehension and listening skills.
Assessment:
Assessment categories are as follows:
ü Non-academic factors + Classwork (20%)
Non-academic factors: primarily, your active participation and preparation for the lesson will be evaluated in this category. Vocabulary, quotes, and a short assignment will be given every lesson. I strongly suggest you complete all tasks. At the end of each block, you will bring your OWN glossary and binder with handouts and extra materials and show it to me. This day will be announced in advance. In the event of any absence, excused or unexcused, it is the student’s responsibility to get any vocabulary or other information covered on the missed day.
Classwork: includes your participation on assignments in the classroom (e.g. presentations, pair and/or groupwork, etc.).
ü Homework (20%)
Homework includes long-term assignments and projects. If you fail to submit your homework on time, you may submit it to me the following day, although a penalty will be assessed. For each day the assignment is late, the score will be lowered by 10%. The late assignment must be turned in within five days, or else it will be marked as a zero. Any absence, excused or unexcused, has no effect on pre-determined deadlines. Always consult the writing and presentation guidelines prior to turning in any work.
ü Quizzes (25%)
You will be given at least 4 - 5 quizzes in each block. You will be informed about quizzes ahead of time. Only in the event of suspicion of copying or cheating will a “pop“ quiz be given.
ü Tests (35%)
You can expect at least 2 tests in each block. Test days will be announced ahead of time, allowing ample time to study.
Resources:
Stuart McKinlay, Bob Hastings: Success Intermediate
and additional materials
Requirements:
ü Attendance and active participation in the class.
ü All homework exercises (short- and long-term) are required to be handed in ON TIME. All late work will be penalized.
ü Your OWN glossary - a notebook for new words, quotes, and phrases/expressions should be handwritten and will be checked at the end of each block. Cheating will result in a zero.
ü Book, exercise book, and binder for handouts/extra materials.
